February UFO

My February UFO was fairly easy.  I took it with me to the retreat in Brownwood and knocked it out the first day.  I had good intentions of getting it quilted but you know what they say about good intentions...It is a small I-Spy quilt and has pictures of sweets, talking my language as my granddaughter says.  If you look closely in the top left hand corner it has Millennium fabric, does that tell you how long I have had the kit?  I will try to get it quilted in March.  "Sew" long for now.

Design wall Monday 2-27-2012

I hope to complete my color challenge quilt today, especially since my car is down again and has to go to the shop. Staying home and sewing is not all bad. In my picture I have all of the blocks for rolling along quilt finished and have them on the design wall as I finished them.  I kind of like the design it made with out putting the Irish chain blocks in.  Since I have most of the Irish chain blocks done I will go ahead and add them but may make this quilt again without them.  Stay turned for Thursday for the final product.  Until then "Sew" long for now.

Winning Quilts

I just went and picked up my quilts from the stock show and rodeo and now have pictures to show.  I entered 7 things and won 6 ribbons!  I was very pleased with that.  First place was a shirt I made for my husband.  We bought the fabric when we were in Hawaii last summer.
I got second place ribbons on my Winter Wonderland quilt,

my Hawaiian Baby quilt, It is a one block wonder made from Hawaiian fabric.  The colors are really purple and yellow ( looks blue in the picture)

and Batik Squared which is a hand quilted king size quilt
I won a 3rd on a Mariner's compass quilt
and a 3rd on a Santa table runner

This quilt didn't win a ribbon . It competed in the same catagory as the Mariner's Compass and the Winter Wonderland, my sister-in-law, Edie won the first place ribbon.

I am already thinking about what to enter next year!   Sew long for now.

Stash Report week 9

I have worked on my color challenge quilt this week but it is not finished so I won't count it until next week .  My stash report for this week is pretty boring.  I hope to sew this afternoon and finish the color challenge quilt.   I have to go to the fairgrounds and pick up all the quilts that I entered in the creative arts division of the San Angelo Stock Show and after that I have to go to a house warming of a co-worker and then I can sew!  The weather is beautiful here with the birds singing, I think spring is just around the corner.  " Sew" long for now.

Design Wall Monday 2-20-2012

I am still trying to recover, unpack and do the laundry after being gone for 4 days to the Brownwood quilt retreat.  My design wall actually has the same thing on it that I posted last week so I am showing a quilt that I made at the retreat that just needs the outside border and then it will be ready to quilt.

Today is a school holiday so I get to spend the day with my 9 year old niece.   She went with me to quilt this morning followed by a trip to Hancock.  This afternoon I need to clean and she is going to work on scrapbooks.  She is so creative and it is fun to see what she comes up with.  The weather in West Texas is beautiful today so there may be a walk in our afternoon plans.  Sew long for now.

Stash Report week 8

I just got home from a retreat in Brownwood sponsored by Judy of Patchwork Times.com.  We had a wonderful time and did lot of sewing so my stash was going down some until.... we went to the quilt store in Santa Anna ( twice) and saw the wonderful sales she was having.  Who can pass up quilting fabric for $4.00 a yard?  Not me!! I finished 3 quilt tops and have only counted the fabric in the top I will count the back after I get them quilted.  I have to go unpack and start my laundry, "sew" long for now.

Design wall Monday

Oh my goodness has this been a Monday!  Usually I start Monday out by hand quilting at the church and then go to Weight Watchers and have the afternoon to do what I want to do.  Well, today I had to work until 12:30 so that I can be off on Thursday and Friday to go to Brownwood for a quilt retreat put on by Judy Laquidara.  I texted my sweet Husband and suggested that we go eat lunch out today since tomorrow and Wednesday would be crazy days for us.  If I was going to eat , I would have to go to Weight Watchers and weigh in first.  I went in weighed came back out and my car wouldn't start.  So after 4 hours of working on the car and going to lunch my car is back home and I am just getting around to do my design wall report.  I worked on my color challenge blocks which is also Judy's Rolling Along quilt.  I take pictures with my phone so the color is not true.  Time to upgrade my camera.... too late now, money went to a new battery for my car!

We have a winner!

The results for our local Rodeo and Stock Show Creative Arts division were announced this week and I am proud to be among the winners.  I will have to post pictures when I get all of the quilts back, for some reason I don't have pictures of some of them.  I won a 1st  in men's clothing, I made my husband a bright orange Hawaiian shirt from  fabric I  bought  when we were in Hawaii last summer.  I won a 3rd place on a Christmas table runner in the holiday decorations category, a 2nd in the baby quilts, 2nd in  machine pieced -hand quilted, a 2nd and 3rd in the machine pieced-machine quilted category ( funny story, I got my sister in law into quilting a few years back and she beat me with a first.... maybe I am a better teacher than a quilter!). I had 7 entries and won 6 ribbons!!  In addition to my ribbons and the ribbon my sister in law won, my 9 year old niece entered 4 Lego displays and won a ribbon on each one ( 2nd,  2 3rds and a 4th and she is getting a special award for creativity).  I would say we are a pretty creative bunch, now if we can only get my brother and nephew to enter the cooking competition , no telling how many ribbons we would have!

Stash Report Week 7

I have been working on my color challenge this week but nothing is finished so I will not count it yet.  I am getting ready to go to the quilting retreat in Brownwood that Judy Laquidara of Patchwork Times is putting on.  My sister-in-law, 2 friends and I will be going Thursday - Sunday.  I should have lots of changes in my post next week.  This week all my counts have stayed the same.  I have to do some cleaning this afternoon, finish knitting a prayer shawl and will work on my color challenge blocks so I can have something to show on my design wall tomorrow.  "Sew" long for now.

No Waste Flying Geese

Jo at  Jo's Country Junction  is starting a new feature on Tuesday, Try it Tuesday.  She is encouraging you to try something new whether it be in sewing, a restaurant or a book.  I tried a new way to make flying geese this week.  I am making the Rolling Along quilt on Judy's Patchwork Times blog.  It calls for flying geese that are finished at 1 1/4 X 2 1/2 .  Judy did not give measurements, she just said use your favorite method.  My favorite method is using the Eleanor Burns rulers but there was not a ruler fitting these measurements.  So I went to my best friend... Google for help.  I found this site http://schools.utah.gov/cte/documents/facs/conference/S04/CT_FlyingGeese.pdf  and what I liked about her geese was the chart with the measurements but I also like the way she made the geese.  I had very little trimming to square up the geese.  I was very pleased.  Look at my block in my post yesterday, I used the flying geese there.  " Sew" long for now.

Design Wall Monday

Well, there is not much on my design wall today, one lonely block!

I am making my quilt for the Color Challenge for Patchwork Times  blog. I am using the Rolling Along pattern that Judy posted as the January QOV quilt.  My center block are all the floral and star point are all the coral but the blocks around the stars will pick up the colors in the fabric.  I hope it works out.  Here is my color scheme I am using. (My photo doesn't show the true colors) .

Stash report for week 6

No change in my stash this week.  I have started my quilt for the color challenge that Judy at Patchwork Times is sponsoring, but won't count that fabric until I finish.  This week I worked on the binding on the quilt that we were hand quilting at my church.  When I finish that I will post a picture and the story of that quilt.  I have also been knitting a prayer shawl that I hope to have finished this week .  I entered 5 quilts, a table runner and a shirt in our local rodeo creative arts division.  The results will be out Tuesday so I will post those later in the week.  I also got 3 kits ready to take to the retreat that Judy Laquidra is having in Brownwood in a couple weeks.  It has been a busy week but nothing to count yet.  "Sew long for now".

UFO Challenge #5

Oh my gosh, when I went to Judy's blog on January 1 and saw that # 5 had been drawn I have to admit I was freaking out just a bit.  My number 5 was a hand applique that I had only 3 leaves prepared to sew on,that is it... nothing else had been done.  I knew I was going to have to hustle to finish it.  I can honestly say I would NOT have finished it if it were not for the challenge.  I learned many things from this: 1. stick to it you may like the final project, 2. READ directions 2 and 3 times ( found this out the hard way when I trimmed it too small and had to sew black back onto it to make it fit, 3. slow down and enjoy the process and 4. I don't want to hand applique any time soon.  Not only it this hand appliqued but it is also hand quilted!  My fingers need a rest!   Here is my wall hanging.....
The colors in this picture are not exactly true, they are much brighter in real life.  UFO # 1 is going to be much easier and can't wait to start it.  Hmmm, maybe I will take it to Judy's Brownwood retreat in a couple weeks.  "Sew long for now".

January Color Challenge

I finished my color challenge a couple weeks ago and have been waiting to show it to you.  I made a crib quilt from 6 fat quarters and the border, backing and binding are a batik that I bought last summer when we made a family trip to Hawaii.  I loved this color scheme so it was pretty easy for me. I will probably give this quilt to my church as a prayer quilt.
On to the February challenge!!
